Israel Moves into Southern Lebanon, Issues Evacuation Orders for Border Area

Israeli forces have entered the town of Khiam in southern Lebanon, intensifying military actions along the volatile border. This operation is part of a broader series of artillery shelling and airstrikes, targeting several areas across southern Lebanon. The entry into Khiam, located approximately six kilometers from the Israeli border, marks a significant escalation in the region's ongoing conflict.

As Israeli forces pressed deeper into the town, the sound of constant bombardment filled the air. The relentless shelling forced the town into a state of chaos, with buildings and structures suffering severe damage. In the midst of the violence, Israeli troops issued evacuation orders to the residents of nearly 30 towns and villages in southern Lebanon, urging them to flee the area for safety.

The Israeli military's decision to take action was communicated through a broadcast on X (formerly Twitter) in Arabic, where they stated that the operation was aimed at Hezbollah positions in the region. The message further warned that the army would continue to target Hezbollah's military infrastructure to neutralize the threat along the border.

Amid the destruction, many residents began to evacuate their homes, including Mohamed, a local resident who fled with his family. Mohamed recounted how he led his family away from their home in the early morning, escaping the fear of impending airstrikes. His daughters, who had already suffered injuries during the 2024 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, were among those displaced. Mohamed and his family sought refuge in a Christian neighborhood in Beirut, far from the conflict zone.

The violence did not stop at Khiam. In the span of just 15 minutes, over thirty explosive bursts rattled the southern Litani Valley, signaling a dramatic escalation in the fighting. Hezbollah retaliated by launching a series of rocket attacks against an Israeli patrol. However, Israeli forces reported no casualties, claiming that their defense systems had successfully intercepted the incoming fire.

The escalation of violence along the Lebanese-Israeli border has sparked widespread concern. The conflict is beginning to spill over into other areas of Lebanon, including the capital, Beirut. Lebanese residents living on the outskirts of the city woke up to the sounds of Israeli airstrikes. In one instance, a hotel and a residential building near the palace gates were directly hit by Israeli fire, leaving several injured. A hotel employee was critically wounded, while others in the area were caught in the crossfire.

The Lebanese healthcare system, already strained due to the ongoing violence, is now under severe pressure. The Bahman Hospital in Beirut was struck by an Israeli missile, causing extensive damage to the facility. Several hospital staff members were injured, and patients inside the hospital were left in a state of panic. The Lebanese Ministry of Health has called for international protection of medical facilities in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, stressing the importance of safeguarding healthcare infrastructure amidst the violence.

The death toll in Lebanon has risen significantly in recent days. According to reports from the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 50 people have been killed and over 300 others injured in Israeli airstrikes since Monday. The violence has also affected several other areas, including Saadiyat and Baalbek. In Baalbek, an airstrike on a residential building resulted in six fatalities and 15 injuries. The residents of Saadiyat also suffered casualties, with six people confirmed dead and eight others wounded in a series of targeted attacks.

As the fighting intensifies, the region faces a growing humanitarian crisis. The escalation of military actions has not only caused significant loss of life but also exacerbated the already dire situation for displaced individuals and families. The future remains uncertain as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah shows no signs of de-escalating, with both sides engaged in an ongoing exchange of fire.
