Unlike experimental hobbyist designs, military-grade drones are engineered for reliability and operational effectiveness in conflict zones.

Ukrainian forces have been actively testing specialized aerial platforms for casualty evacuation. In August 2025, operations demonstrated drones lifting wounded soldiers across contested areas, highlighting a strategic focus on rapid extraction. British-supplied Molloy T150 drones, capable of short-range passenger transport, have been deployed experimentally. Commercial platforms like DJI’s FlyCart 100, with a carrying capacity of up to 190 pounds, are also adapted for lightweight patient transport. More advanced systems, such as the Ayudah-12, a 12-rotor multicopter designed for casualty evacuation, can lift over 300 pounds, extending operational capability beyond traditional rescue methods.

The use of drones in Ukraine addresses the critical need for rapid extraction within the Golden Hour, a period essential for improving survival outcomes. Unlike conventional helicopter evacuations, drone systems reduce human exposure to hostile fire and can navigate terrain that is otherwise inaccessible. These platforms also provide cost-effective alternatives to larger commercial passenger drones, with some models available for under $17,000, making them accessible for ongoing operations.

Beyond medical evacuation, heavy-lift drones offer potential for tactical troop deployment. Tests have shown that drones, including Russian Perun models, can carry assault personnel, demonstrating a capacity for rapid, unconventional insertions. Historical examples, such as Royal Marine Commandos using helicopters in Afghanistan in 2007, illustrate the strategic value of aerial mobility in combat. Modern drones extend this capability, allowing for covert movement across previously impassable terrain and enabling fast, unexpected deployments.

Despite their advantages, drone-based evacuation and assault operations carry inherent risks. Automated flight lacks the human oversight of traditional helicopter missions, presenting dangers during transport. Nevertheless, proven technologies offer a viable tactical option, reshaping how forces can operate in high-risk environments. The integration of drones into both casualty evacuation and air assault missions represents a significant evolution in military strategy, offering flexible and efficient solutions for modern warfare.
